CAROLE KING: HOME AGAIN - LIVE IN CENTRAL PARK
It all started when …
In May 1973, producer Lou Adler put together the first free concert in Central Park’s The Great Lawn featuring Carole King with concert promoter, Ron Delsener. Over 100,000 people showed up to listen to Carole sing some of her classic songs and perform songs from her new album. The close-ups and the sound were incredible. It was a 12 camera shoot and even 50 years later … this was a treat to see all this footage and new interviews. Also Chip Monck was part of putting the staging together.
Seeing Lou came full circle for me. Many years ago Lou let John and I stay at his fabulous home in Bel Air which at the time he shared with actress Britt Ekland. This was also Thanks to Andrew Oldham for setting it up. I think one of the last times I saw Lou was in NY when he premiered the play ROCKY HORROR SHOW on Broadway in 1975. John and I attended the original opening in Los Angeles in 1974 at The Roxy Theatre.
Lou produced Carole King’s TAPESTRY album. One of mine and John’s favorite album of all times. Such a gifted writer and vocals are smooth like glass in this movie. It was a treat to see both Lou and Ron up on the stage after the movie doing a Q & A.
A Joyous Day!
It has been a long 4 years under the Trump administration. A majority of Americans felt the same way as I do. Once the announcement that Joe Biden would become the 46th President of the United States, celebrations erupted everywhere across the nation. I was so overwhelmed, tears were streaming. The thought that we would have the current president for another 4 years was depressing and I wasn't the only one! I'm not saying the changes will happen overnight but we are now set back on the right track, IMHO. A healing path which this country desperately needs.
History was also made in other ways too. Joe Biden's bid for the presidency, this was his 3rd time. He will be the oldest person to be sworn in as president on January 20th 2021. Joe Biden had the most popular votes in election history! We needed calm at a time like this with the Covid-19 still raging, racism and a nation so divided. Meanwhile, his running mate, Kamala Harris, is the first woman to be elected as the VP and she is also a woman of color. She broke the "Glass Ceiling." This is definitely HISTORY IN THE MAKING!
Thank you to all who helped get them there especially Stacey Abrams, Majority Whip James Clyburn to name a couple. I know there are many, many more...God bless them all to getting them to the finish line. And now, for a new beginning. Heads of many foreign countries sending in their best wishes already. It was as the song said, "POWER TO THE PEOPLE."
My old friend Spencer Davis
I had received a call from my guitarist friend, Peter Jameson, who played with Spencer Davis. Seeing his name flash across my mobile phone always raises a question..."Why is he calling?" He called to let me know that Spencer had left us. I was shocked but not surprised. Peter and I reminisced a bit. Spencer, you gave us some great songs to remember you by. I'm glad I got to see you a couple years back on the Happy Together Tour. We just talked until we caught up. My condolences to June, his partner of many years, his children, and to his friends. Rest in Peace Spencer.
